Antioxidant property of Celastrus paniculatus: In this study aqueous, methanolic, chloroform and petroleum ether extracts of seeds of Celastrus paniculatus were investigated for their effect on cognitive functions in rats. Male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g each were used to study effects on learning and memory through use of the shuttlebox, step-through, step-down and elevated plus maze paradigms. Only the aqueous seed extract (200 mg/kg body wt. for 14 days) showed an improvement in […]
Celastrus paniculatus seed water soluble extracts: Aqueous extracts of Celastrus paniculatus (CP) seed have been reported to improve learning and memory in rats. In addition, these extracts were shown to have antioxidant properties, augmented endogenous antioxidant enzymes, and decreased lipid peroxidation in rat brain. However, water soluble extracts of CP seed (CP-WSE) have not been evaluated for their neuroprotective effects. In the study reported here, we used enriched forebrain primary neuronal cell (FBNC) cultures to study the […]
Brahmi rasayana Improves Learning and Memory: Ayurveda is the oldest medical science in the Indian subcontinent and has been practiced since the 12th Century bc. Its objective is to accomplish physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being by adopting preventive, health promoting and holistic approach towards life (7,8). Vata, pitta, and kapha are the three psychobiological dimensions (energy) or biological rhythms regulating the entire functioning of the human body. Vata, is the energy that strengthens intellectual power, respiration and the activity of sensory organs. Sadhak Pitta regulates digestion of food and body temperature and is responsible for intelligence and memory. Tarpak kapha provides nutrition to the sense organs and is helpful in lubrications of the nervous tissue. According to Ayurveda, Alzheimer’s disease is an imbalance of vata, pitta and kapha. Medhya herbs such as Convolvulus pluricaulis, Centella asiatica, Bacopa monnieri, Acorus calamus, and Celastrus paniculatus are beneficial in cognitive disorders.
